CARE@Paquin Champions for Accessible Living Breakfast

Hello,

I’m writing to invite you to help us recognize Coletta Eichenberger, Lee Henson, Aimee Wehmeier and Kathleen Weinschenk at the CARE@Paquin Champions for Accessible Living Breakfast. CARE@Paquin is a new organization, supporting the accessible recreation program housed in Paquin Tower, primarily benefiting our neighbors with disabilities. It is open to the community, and people from all over town go there because it offers free and low-cost recreational programming in an accessible location.

All of the program’s participants are low income. Many live solely on social security benefits (making just over $700/month). Most are designated as 100% disabled.

As part of CARE@Paquin’s mission to support accessible recreation, they have created the Champions for Accessible Living Awards to recognize people in our community who have made unique and substantial contributions to the quality of life for our neighbors with disabilities. Won’t you join us?

Broke my ankle

Well today I broke my ankle out back in Paquin Park while walking down a small grassy slope from the garden.

I have to call for an appointment with a Ortho Surgeon tomorrow for next week.

I felt and heard it go snap, crackle, pop, grind and all of those fun things with broken bones.

That will teach me not to use the stairs.

Paquin apartment has stove-top fire

Saturday, May 16, 2009
A cooking pan left untended on a stove caused smoke and triggered a fire alarm in a fifth-floor apartment of Paquin Tower last night.

No one was injured, although damages were estimated at $15,000, Columbia fire Capt. Eric Hartman said.

At about 7:20 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to the public housing high-rise at 1201 Paquin St., where they discovered light smoke on the fifth floor and an automatic sprinkler operating inside Apt. 514.

Inside the apartment, firefighters found that the stove-top fire was extinguished.

The occupant of the apartment, (removed), told firefighters he had turned on the stove to heat a pan of oil and then left the apartment.

But nine apartments sustained water damage from the sprinkler system.

The Paquin Tower Daily Check System

What it is and what it is not. The daily Check System (DCS) primary goal is to ensure the wellbeing of participating members here at Paquin Tower with daily welfare checks. The welfare checks are carried out by volunteers and the whole process is non-invasive. Participating members have 5x7 cards labeled Monday thru Sunday. Each day the member changes out the card to reflect the current corresponding day before the checks are initiated. For instance, if it is a Wednesday, the member would make sure the card on their door says Wednesday. At predetermined and agreed upon intervals, a DCS volunteer will check the door for the matching day. If, in this case, the card reads Wednesday, that tells the DCS person that the tenant has been up, ambulatory enough to have made it to the door and switch out the card! All is good, so the checker moves on.

If the card has NOT been rotated to the new day, a set of escalation procedures start to make sure our tenant is located, healthy and in good shape.

What the DCS is not is a way of intruding into people lives or personal business. The DCS member is generally at the tenants door no more than 5 seconds before they move on. NO records are kept and everything is strictly confidential and in the control of the participating DCS member.

Some of us are unfortunately in the position where we are all alone. No family, friends that stop over frequently, no caregivers, not even a pet. The Daily Check System tries to bridge this gap by being a silent, but very concerned friend and neighbor to make sure no one has fallen and can’t get back up. To make sure no one is to sick to make it to the kitchen for nourishment, or has had a seizure, or any number of accidents that could be life threatening.

If you would like to get involved, either as a checker or a participant, please see April Woodall in Residential Services and she will see that you have everything you need. It is also a good idea to enroll in the vial of life program at the same time since both of these life saving opportunities compliment one another.

Thank You Crossroads Church!!

The residents of Paquin Tower,The Paquin Tower Resident Association,The Paquin Tower Gardening Club and the participants of the Adapted Recreation Program at Paquin Tower would like to thank the Crossroads Church Group and all of it's members and volunteers who came to Paquin Tower and did a huge Spring Clean Up on the entire community park, did some very nice decorative painting inside of the building itself and helped over 20 residents with cleaning their units on Saturday 5 9 2009.

They did a wonderful job and really made the entire area of Paquin Park look very nice and looking the best I have ever seen it in the 5 years I have lived at Paquin Tower.
