Now you can keep up on all of the updates with this great fund raising group who is trying as hard as they can to keep the Adaptive Recreation Program at Paquin Tower.

Another changing of the guard

Once again as fate always has it around Paquin Tower Lee Radtke has been promoted and Penny Harrington will be taking over the controls of the managerial duties at Paquin Tower.

Alot will miss Lee being around and I know some will not but that is the way life goes. Lee will be doing alot more work in she will be over seeing all of the various housing operations with in CHA. She will be very busy learning her new job that is a fact.

We wish Lee all of the best in her new adventure and we know she will still be bouncing in and out of Paquin Tower alot too.

Lee Elementary to expand playground into Paquin Park

Lee Elementary School will expand its playground this spring into a small section of school property currently part of Paquin Park.

The project, which will include raised garden beds, native Missouri plants, a stage and a seating area, is being funded by a grant from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

"We want to make it as full of nature as possible," Lee Principal Teresa VanDover said.

Teachers from each grade level had some input for new features as well, VanDover said.

The school district will install a fence this spring to define the new boundary, but city park staff will maintain the fence. The new Lee playground will be open to the public during non-school hours.

"We really just want a safe setting for the kids," VanDover said.

Phil Steinhaus, chief executive officer of the Columbia Housing Authority, which manages Paquin Tower, said he's excited about the changes. He said there have been problems in the past with drug and alcohol use near the playground and that the expansion should curb that.

"Our residents (at Paquin Tower) like the raised gardens and the park but can be scared of homeless persons and others using that back area," Steinhaus said. "This change should improve the safety of the area because that section (of the park) was obscured from street view."

At its Feb. 2 meeting, City Council asked that a formal agreement between the city and the school district be drafted. An agreement between the two would allow Paquin Tower residents to continue using a portion of school property that gives them access to the ADA entrance of Paquin Park's community gardens.

Jack Jensen, the school district's assistant superintendent for elementary education, said a memorandum of understanding should be ready soon.

The city and school district have a history of working together on combined parks and playgrounds.

Parks Services manager Mike Griggs called it "a great working relationship."

Jensen said the Lee-Paquin arrangement is evidence of that.

“It is another example of how, when (the school district and city) come together, playgrounds and parks can be improved,” Jensen said.

Showing their appreciation

In a way of saying thank you to all of the residents of Paquin Tower for the troubles and inconvenience of working so hard in helping to eliminate clutter and the bed bugs from Paquin Tower Win Gate Pest Control brought in 4 huge boxes of fresh assorted donuts from HyVee for all of the early morning coffee drinkers and residents of Paquin Tower.

This was really such a very nice gesture on the part of Win Gate Pest Control and all who were partakers of this special treat were very happy, although some might have had to check their sugar levels later in the day.

It is not very often that residents of Paquin Tower see this kind of a treat but when it does happen they are always very grateful and especially as so in this fading economy we all live in.

In the war against the bed bugs the fight is going quite well with reports I am hearing from CHA officials daily there was only one unit that had any infestation and even though there were alot of follow up inspections with preventative spraying it looks like the problem might now be under control at last.

Win Gate Pest Control goes into a unit and literally removes any bed bugs or bed bug eggs they might find after long hard inspections of all of the owners belongings by the use of adhesive tape, vacuuming and other means then by preventative spraying and reinspections.

They truly go after this pest and eliminate it from the unit as best as they can.

Thank you once again to Win Gate Pest Control from all of the residents of Paquin Tower.
